The Waterloo Community Foundation is excited to offer the Mother Moon Service Scholarship in partnership with the Waterloo Youth City Council and the Leighty Family Fund. This Scholarship honors and uplifts students who are serving their community. Recipients will be chosen by a select group of youth members of the Waterloo Youth City Council allowing a unique opportunity for students to celebrate the good work of their fellow students. Applicant’s identities will be concealed during the selection process.
The scholarship was established in honor of Sadie “Mother” Moon, who raised not only her 10 children, but was a de facto mother to many poor, disadvantaged and other neighborhood kids, including Ike Leighty.
Through the generosity of the Leighty Family Fund the Mother Moon Service Scholarship will recognize students who are quietly and actively engaged in their community. Seven $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually in partnership with Waterloo Youth City Council to help with the cost of advanced education for students graduating from East High, West High, Columbus, or Expo. A preference will be given toward first-generation college students or students with demonstrated financial need.
“It’s exciting to see this next generation of young leaders exemplify what it means to have contributed to the betterment of their local community through the gift of service and time,” said Carol Luce, Director of the Waterloo Youth City Council. “Our program is all about empowering young leaders to use their voices and make a difference in their community.”
Applications for this scholarship, along with a variety of other opportunities, are now open at wloocommunityfoundation.org/scholarships.
