Local Student Awarded EAA 227 Young Pilot’s Scholarship

We are proud to announce that Andrew Tjaden has been awarded the EAA 227 Young Pilot’s Scholarship through the Waterloo Community Foundation.

This scholarship supports local students pursuing their private pilot’s license and aims to help address the national pilot shortage by encouraging young aviators to train and thrive right here in the Cedar Valley.

Andrew, an aspiring pilot and participant in the EAA Young Eagles program, is completing his private pilot’s license at Livingston Aviation in Waterloo. He received a $1,000 scholarship award to support his flight training.

Andrew is in his first year at Iowa State University studying electrical engineering. He hopes to one day fly for the U.S. Air Force.

The EAA 227 Young Pilot’s Scholarship is open to eligible candidates enrolled in accredited pilot training programs at Waterloo Airport, Independence Airport, Oelwein Airport, or Waverly Airport. Up to five awards may be granted each year.

Paul Wallace, President of EAA Chapter 227, stated, “We hope this scholarship will both incentivize and assist our local youth who want to achieve their dreams of becoming professional pilots”.

The EAA Chapter 227 includes members from the communities surrounding the airports in Waterloo, Independence, Oelwein, and Waverly. Members include aviation enthusiasts, builders, and pilots who get together to exchange ideas and serve the local aviation community. They administer multiple programs, including Technical Counselors, Flight Advisor, and the Young Eagles program that introduces kids to the world of aviation with free plane rides. Young Eagles is the only program of its kind and has flown over 2 million kids.

The EAA 227 Young Pilot Scholarship reflects the chapter’s commitment to supporting the next generation of aviators. Applications for the EAA 227 Young Pilot’s Scholarship are accepted year-round through the Waterloo Community Foundation’s website at https://wloocommunityfoundation.org/scholarships/#career-specific
